Easy French Onion Dip:

Optional Final Touch:

Directions:

1. Caramelize the Onions:

Let’s start with the preparation of this easy French onion dip.

  • Heat the olive oil in a large fry pan over medium heat.
  • Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, for about 3 – 5 minutes.
  • Reduce the heat to medium-low, add salt, pepper, and sugar.
  • Continue to cook, stirring frequently, until the onions are deeply golden brown and caramelized, for an additional 3 – 7 minutes.

2. Combine and Chill:

  • In a medium bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, garlic and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Once the caramelized onions have cooled, add them to the sour cream mixture. Stir well to combine. Taste and add extra salt if needed.
  • Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or preferably longer, to allow the flavors to melt.

3 Serve Easy French Onion Dip:

  • Garnish with chopped fresh chives, if desired.
  • Serve with your favorite potato chips, crackers, or vegetable sticks.

Tips

  • Add some heat: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to the dip.
  • Make it cheesy: Stir in 1/2 cup of grated Gruyère or Parmesan cheese.
  • Make it ahead: This dip can be made a day or two in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
  • Use different onions: Try using sweet onions, red onions, or a combination for a different flavor profile.
