Recipe Editor

Our Recipe Editor is one of the most advanced on the market, allowing all users to fill and format recipes to their liking. It supports everything from easy and fast recipe creation, where you provide just a few basic details, to well-organized recipes with step-by-step pictures and instructions written in a reader-friendly nested structure. And everything in between!

You choose how you want to enter your recipe. The Recipe Editor is great for adding new recipes and for formatting existing ones.

Basics

To use the Recipe Editor to publish or edit a recipe, you need: 

  • An account on cookinghub.com (create a free lifetime account here)
  • To be logged in

To publish new recipe:

  1. Open My Menu. (Learn more about My Menu here).
  2. Select Publish Next Recipe. (This option is at the top of the menu and under Recipes > My Recipes > Publish Next Recipe.)

To edit an already published recipe:

  1. Open My Menu.
  2. Select Published Recipes. (This option is found under Recipes > My Recipes > Published Recipes) and locate the recipe you want to edit.

Recipe Approval Process

Save Your Recipe

  • Recipe progress is not saved automatically.
  • Click Save & Continue or Save Draft to save progress.
  • Submitting your recipe also saves progress.

How Does Recipe Approval Work?

  1. Complete all required recipe information, including a title picture.
  2. Click Submit in the Recipe Action Menu to send for approval.
  3. Wait for review and approval, then edit or delete as needed.

Note: We reserve the right to decline any recipe for any reason, but we strive to publish as many recipes as possible.

Quick Guide

Recipe Editor Actions Menu

  • Recipe Editor Actions Menus are located on the right side or at the bottom of the page depending on the device.
  • The Basic Recipe Editor Actions Menu is available when first creating a recipe and includes options to save, continue, or discard the recipe.
  • The Regular Recipe Editor Actions Menu appears after basic recipe information is filled in and offers options to save, move, publish, preview, or discard the recipe.

Basic Information

  • Recipe Name is a required field and should be descriptive and accurate.
  • Servings is a required field for specifying the yield of the recipe.
  • Recipe Introduction is an optional field for adding details and context about the recipe.

Photos & Video

  • The Main Photo is a required field and should be a photo representing the finished dish.
  • The Gallery is optional and can include additional photos related to the recipe, but not photos of the recipe steps.
  • YouTube Video ID or URL is an optional field for adding a link to a relevant YouTube video.

Time and Difficulty Level

  • Active Time in Minutes is a required field for the total active time spent on the recipe, excluding unsupervised activities.
  • Total Time in Minutes is a required field for the overall preparation time, including unsupervised activities.
  • Difficulty is a required field for selecting the level of difficulty of the recipe on a scale of 1/5 (easy) to 5/5 (expert).

Categorization

  • Nationality is a required field for selecting the country of origin that inspired the recipe.
  • Categories are optional and can be used to specify the type of dish (e.g., appetizer, main course).
  • Cooking Styles and Diets are also optional and can be used to provide additional information about the recipe.

Ingredients

  • You can add ingredients by searching or adding custom ingredients in the Add Ingredient field.
  • Multiple ingredient sections can be created to organize complex recipes.
  • Ingredients can be edited, deleted, or reordered within each section.

Add New Ingredient Pop-Up

  • The New Ingredient pop-up window is used to set up information for each ingredient, and it opens after selecting ingredients from the list or clicking Add Custom Ingredient.
  • Most ingredients only require quantity and unit, but additional information like form and custom form can be added.
  • Advanced settings allow for further customization, such as marking ingredients as Adjust if needed or Optional, adding notes, or linking to a recipe on CookingHub.

Tools

  • The Tools section is optional, but it allows you to specify the tools used in the recipe.
  • You can add tools by searching or adding custom tools in the Add Tools field.
  • Added tools can be edited, deleted, or reordered using the corresponding icons.

Add New Tool Pop-Up

  • The Add New Tool pop-up is used to configure information for each tool, and it opens after selecting a tool from the list or clicking Add Custom Tool.
  • The Tool field is mandatory and either pre-filled or requires manual input of the custom tool’s name.
  • The Quantity field is mandatory and can be adjusted as needed, while the Optional Note field allows for additional information.

Recipe Directions

  • Recipe Directions are entered within Recipe Sections, which are boxes created by clicking Add New Recipe Section.
  • Recipe directions are not required if a YouTube video link is included, but it is recommended to fill them in.
  • Recipe Sections can be edited, deleted, or reordered using the provided buttons and icons.

Select Type of New Recipe Section Type Pop-up

  • The Select Type of New Recipe Section pop-up allows you to choose from seven different types of recipe sections to add to your recipe.
  • The Main Recipe Content section is the most common type used for writing recipe directions and including photos within steps.
  • Other types of recipe sections include Recipe Variables, Photo, Tip, Important, Note, and Reference to Content, each serving a specific purpose in providing additional information or context within the recipe.

Main Recipe Content

  • The Main Recipe Content section is used to write recipe directions and include photos within individual steps.
  • It is recommended to divide each section into subsections, repeat ingredient names and quantities in each step, and number the steps for clarity.
  • This section includes fields for step numbers, section titles, text for directions, and a button to add photos.

Recipe Variables

  • The Recipe Variables section is designed for recipes with multiple potential outcomes, such as a pasta dough recipe with different pasta shape options.
  • This section can be used multiple times within a recipe as needed.
  • It includes fields for adding a title and description, as well as a button to add new items with text and photos.

Photo

  • The Photo section allows you to insert a single photo between recipe steps, separate from the title photo and recipe gallery.
  • Before using this section, it’s important to select a title photo and photos for additional galleries at the beginning of the recipe.
  • To add a photo in this section, simply click the camera icon located in the right corner.

Tip

  • The Tip section is ideal for providing helpful tips for your recipe and has a yellow background for easy identification.
  • It can be used multiple times within a recipe as needed.
  • This section includes a text field for a title and description, and a checkbox to add more content that appears after clicking Read More.

  • The Important section is used to highlight crucial information about your recipe, with a red background for emphasis.

  • The Reference to Content section is used to link to other relevant content on CookingHub.com, such as recipes or kitchen guides.
  • You can add references by searching for them in the Search field and selecting the desired content.

Recipe Editor Actions Menu – Detailed

The recipe editor features two side menus called Recipe Editor Actions for performing basic tasks:

  • Basic Recipe Editor Action Menu

Where are the Recipe Editor Actions Menus Located?

  • On the right side on full-screen computers and large tablets
  • At the bottom of page on cell phones, small tablets, or computers with low resolution or not in full-screen mode.

Basic Recipe Editor Actions Menu

Available when you first start creating a recipe.

Recipe Editor (12)

Recipe Name

  • Automatic field.
  • Displays the first few words of your recipe’s name after you enter it.

Save & Continue

  • Button.
  • Saves your recipe and opens the next section of the editor.
  • Use this to save your work and come back to the recipe later.

Discard

  • Button.
  • Permanently deletes the recipe. This action cannot be undone.

Regular Recipe Editor Actions Menu

Appears after you’ve filled in the basic recipe information and reached the recipe directions. Offers more options than the basic version.

Recipe Editor (16)

Recipe Name

  • Automatic field.
  • Displays the first few words of your recipe’s name.

Status

  • Automatic field.
  • Shows the current status of your recipe (e.g., draft, published).

Save to Draft

  • Button.
  • Saves your recipe as a draft to be completed and published later.

Move to Draft

  • Button.
  • Available only for already published recipes (Recipes > My Recipes > Published Recipes, then click on edit under selected recipe)
  • Move your recipe back to draft status for further editing.

Publish

  • Button.
  • Submit your recipe for review and approval.
  • We will review your recipe as soon as possible.

Save as Private

  • Button.
  • Publish the recipe only to your private collection (not visible to others).
  • This option bypasses the approval process.

Preview

  • Button.
  • Opens a preview of your recipe in a new window.
  • Use this to see how your recipe will look when published.
  • Important: This button becomes available after you complete the basic recipe information and are allow to enter recipe directions.

Discard

  • Button.
  • Permanently deletes the recipe. This action cannot be undone.

Basic information about your recipe.

Name of the Recipe

  • Required field.
  • Enter a descriptive name that accurately represents the recipe.

Servings

  • Required field.
  • Enter the number of servings the recipe yields.

Serving Units

  • Optional field.
  • If left blank, the default “servings” will be used.
  • You can change this to other units (e.g., cups, quarts, FL OZ).

Recipe Introduction

  • Optional field.
  • Describe the recipe, share related stories or information, and provide additional details.

Photos and Video – Detailed

  • Required field.
  • Click the camera icon to add a photo.
  • Select the photo that best represents the finished dish.

Gallery

  • Add other photos related to the recipe to create a gallery.

YouTube Video ID or URL

  • Optional field.
  • Add a link to a YouTube video related to the recipe

Time and Difficulty Level – Detailed

Active Time in Minutes

  • Required field.
  • Insert the number of minutes representing the total active time spent working on your recipe.
  • This includes all preparation and cooking activities, including time in the oven, but it doesn’t include any activity that doesn’t require supervision, e.g., rising or proofing the dough, marinating the meat, or resting in the refrigerator.
  • Important: Insert just the number; do not include a unit or dot.

Total Time in Minutes

  • Required field.
  • Insert the number representing the total preparation time, including activities that don’t require supervision.
  • Important: Insert just the number; do not include a unit or dot.

Difficulty

  • Required field.
  • Select the level of difficulty of the recipe, knowing that 1/5 is a very easy recipe and 5/5 is an expert-level recipe.

Categorization – Detailed

Select the nationality, categories, cooking styles, and diet that best describe your recipe.

Nationality

  • Required field.
  • Select the country of origin that inspired the recipe.
  • If the recipe is not based on a specific national cuisine, select your own country of origin.
  • Important: You can only select one nationality per recipe

Categories

  • Optional field.
  • Select the categories that best describe the dish (e.g., appetizer, main course, dessert).
  • Important: If left blank, we will assign the most appropriate categories.

Cooking Styles

  • Optional field.
  • Select the cooking methods used in the recipe (e.g., stewing, frying, boiling).
  • Important: If left blank, we will assign one cooking style.

Diets

  • Optional field.
  • Select the specific diet(s) the recipe adheres to (e.g., vegan, keto, vegetarian).
  • Important: Only select a diet if you are certain it is accurate. We are not responsible for incorrect diet selections or any resulting consequences.

Ingredients – Detailed

Select and organize the ingredients used in your recipe.

Important: Each recipe must have at least one ingredient section (open by default) and at least one ingredient.

Notes:

  • Ingredients are added within ingredient sections. One ingredient section is open by default, so you can start adding ingredients immediately.
  • One ingredient section is usually enough for most recipes. Two or more sections are a great option for complex recipes with multiple parts (e.g., sauce, meat, side dish).

Ingredients Header

  • Optional field.
  • Each ingredient section has its own field for entering an ingredients header.
  • Leave it blank if your recipe has only one ingredient section.
  • If your recipe has multiple sections, enter a name for each section (e.g., Marinade, Main Course, Final Touch).

Add Ingredient

  • Required field (at least one ingredient per recipe).
  • Search for an ingredient by typing its name (e.g., onion), then press Enter or click Search.
  • Select the best match to open the Add New Ingredient pop-up window. Complete the steps in the pop-up to add the new ingredient (read more here).
  • The “Add Custom Ingredient” button will also appear when searching.

Add Custom Ingredient

  • Button.
  • This option appears only after you’ve searched for ingredients and is located below the search results.
  • Use this option if you can’t find the ingredient you need. This opens the Add New Ingredient pop-up window, where you can add a custom ingredient (read more here).

Add Ingredients Section

  • Button.
  • Most recipes use one section, but you can create more to organize complex recipes.
  • Fill in the Ingredients Header for each section if you have two or more.
  • At least one section is required per recipe.
  • Delete sections by clicking the Discard Section button.
  • Reorder sections by clicking the round arrows on the left or by dragging and dropping the cursor between the arrows.

Ingredients Note

  • Optional field.
  • One note field is available per recipe.
  • Use for additional information about the ingredients (e.g., general purchasing tips). Do not include links.

Square with Arrow

  • Icon button (it appears next to each ingredient added to the recipe).
  • Click this icon next to an ingredient to learn more about it in a new window.

Pen

  • Icon button (it appears next to each ingredient added to the recipe).
  • Click this icon to edit an ingredient.

Trash Can

  • Icon button (it appears next to each ingredient added to the recipe).
  • Click this icon to delete an ingredient.

Cursor

  • Icon button (it appears next to each ingredient added to the recipe).
  • Click and drag this icon to reorder ingredients within a section.
  • Use the cursor on the left (between the round orange buttons) to reorder sections if your recipe has multiple sections.

Add New Ingredient Pop-Up – Detailed

Set up all the information for each recipe ingredient.

How can I open the New Ingredient pop-up?

  • The Add New Ingredient pop-up opens after you select ingredients from our list (by searching in Add Ingredients) or click the Add Custom Ingredient button.

Important:

  • You can set a lot of parameters about each ingredient of your recipe to best fit your recipe style writing – many options, no requirements (all fields are optional except for the ingredient name).
  • Most ingredients would be fine with just quantity and unit, for example, “1 cup of flour.”
  • Some ingredients do not need any further specification; for example, salt in some recipes can stay without a quantity when the recipe further specifies “generously salt.”
  • In some cases, you may select more information for each ingredient, resulting in, for example, “1 cup of onion – peeled and finally chopped” (optionally substitute with scallions).
  • A ingredient that has already been added can be edited within the same window.

Regular

The regular fields provide all the options most users will ever need.

Quantity

  • Optional field (you don’t need to provide a quantity for the ingredient).
  • Enter a number to describe the quantity (e.g., 1).
  • You can also select a fraction (e.g., ¼) or combine a number and a fraction (e.g., 1 ¼).

Unit

  • Optional field.
  • Select the unit from the list (e.g., cup).

Ingredient

  • Required field.
  • If you select an ingredient from our list, this field will be pre-filled (you can still choose a different ingredient if needed).
  • If you click Add Custom Ingredient, enter the custom ingredient’s name.

Form

  • Optional field.
  • Select the most appropriate form for your ingredient (e.g., peeled and chopped, shredded).

Custom Form

  • Optional field.
  • If you don’t find the desired form, enter the new form here.

Submit

  • Button.
  • Click this button to add the ingredient to the recipe’s ingredient list.

Cancel

  • Button.
  • Click this button to cancel adding the ingredient; it won’t be saved to the recipe.

Advanced

To access more options for the selected ingredient, check the Advanced Settings box.

Adjust if Needed

  • Optional checkbox.
  • Select this if the ingredient’s quantity might need adjustment in some cases.
  • If selected, a note will appear after the ingredient stating Adjust if needed (e.g., 2 Tbsp frying oil (adjust if needed)).

Optional

  • Optional checkbox.
  • Select this if the ingredient is optional and can be omitted from the recipe.
  • A note stating optional will appear after the ingredient (e.g., 2 tsp ground cayenne pepper (optional)).

Optional Note

  • Optional field.
  • Add any relevant notes about the ingredient (e.g., “optionally substitute with scallions”).
  • The note will appear after the ingredient.

Optionally Select a Recipe to Prepare the Ingredients

  • Optional field.
  • If your ingredient has a recipe on CookingHub, you can link them by selecting the recipe (e.g., “ketchup”).
  • If selected, a note saying store-bought or recipe here will appear after the ingredient, with Recipe Here text  linking to the selected recipe.

Tools – Detailed

Select and organize tools used in the recipe.

Notes:

  • This section is fully optional (all fields in this section are entirely optional).
  • If tools are not selected, our administrator may add them.

Add Tools

  • Optional field.
  • Search for a tool by typing its name (e.g. pot), then press Enter or click on Search.
  • Then select the best matching tool by clicking on it. This opens the Add New Tool pop-up window, where you can complete the remaining steps to add a new tool (read more here).
  • Searching for the tool will also reveal the Add Custom Tool button.

Add Custom Tool

  • Button.
  • Important: This option is visible only if you have entered and searched for tool, and it is located below all the written options.
  • Select this option only if you cannot find the required tool in the Add Tolls search field. This opens the Add New Tool pop-up window, where you can complete the remaining steps to add a custom tool (read more here).

Square With Arrow

  • Icon button (it appears next to each tool added to the recipe).
  • Click this button next to each added tool to learn more about it (a new window will open with information).

Pen

  • Icon button (it appears next to each tool added to the recipe).
  • Click on the pen icon to edit the tool.

Trash Can

  • Icon button (it appears next to each tool added to the recipe).
  • Click on the trash can icon next to each tool to delete the tool.

Cursor

  • Icon button (it appears next to each tool added to the recipe).
  • You can reorganize the order of the tools by clicking and holding the cursor (located next to each tool) and then dragging it to the desired position.

Add New Tool Pop-Up – Detailed

Configure all information related to each tool used in the recipe.

Notes:

  • The Add New Tool pop-up opens after you select tool from our list (by searching in Add Tools) or click the Add Custom Tool button.
  • A tool that has already been added can be edited within the same pop-up window.

Tool

  • Mandatory field
  • If opened after selecting tools from our list, this field will be pre-filled (you can still choose a different tool if needed).
  • If opened after clicking the Add Custom Tool button, you’ll need to enter the custom tool’s name.

Quantity

  • Mandatory field.
  • The quantity is pre-selected as 1, but you can change it to any number.

Optional Note

  • Optional field.
  • Here you can provide additional information and tips for the tool.

Submit

  • Button.
  • Clicking this button adds the tool to the recipe’s tool list.

Cancel

  • Button.
  • Clicking on this button will cancel the tool – the tool will not be saved to the recipe list.

Recipe Directions – Detailed

Basic Recipe Directions Structure

Important:

  • Recipe directions must be entered within Recipe Sections (boxes). Read more about Recipe sections below.
  • Filling in recipe directions is not required if you include a YouTube video link, but it is always recommended.
  • You can begin adding recipe directions after completing all required basic recipe information.

Add New Recipe Section

  • Button.
  • Click the button to open the Select Type of New Recipe Section pop-up window. This will allow you to choose from seven available recipe section types.
  • It becames available after you complete the basic recipe information.
  • A dialog will open where you can select the type of recipe section you want.

Edit

  • Button.
  • Available on each added Recipe Section (box).
  • Click to edit the section’s content.

Discard

  • Button.
  • Available on each added Recipe Section (box).
  • Permanently deletes the section. This action cannot be undone.

Arrows

  • Up and down round buttons.
  • Located on the right side of each recipe section.
  • Click to reorder the sections (only works with two or more sections).

Cursor

  • Icon button.
  • Located on the right side of each recipe section, between the arrows.
  • Drag and drop to reorder sections.

Select Type of New Recipe Section Type Pop-up – Detailed

In the Select Type of New Recipe Section pop-up, you can choose from seven different types of recipe sections.

Basic Information About Recipe Sections:

  • Currently, there are seven different types of recipe sections available.
  • The Main Recipe Content section is typically the most used (and sometimes the only one needed), but you have the flexibility to choose the best sections for your recipe.
  • You can mix and match recipe sections, using each as many times as you’d like.

What Happens After Selecting a Recipe Section?

  1. A dialog box will open for you to add content to the chosen section.
  2. Fill in the content, ensuring you complete all required fields marked with an asterisk (*).
  3. When finished, click Save & Continue, Save & Add New or Cancel

Common Buttons for All Types of Recipe Sections

  • Save & Continue
    • Saves the section and returns you to the main recipe editor.
    • This button is enabled only when all mandatory fields (marked with *) are filled.
  • Save & Add New
    • Saves the section and opens the Select Type of New Recipe Section window.
    • This button is enabled only when all mandatory fields (marked with *) are filled.
  • Cancel
    • Permanently deletes the section. This action cannot be undone.

Main Recipe Content

  • Use this section to write your recipe directions and include photos within individual steps.

Main Recipe Content – Detailed

The Most Common Recipe Section

  • Allows you to write recipe directions and include photos within individual steps.
  • This section can be used in each recipe as often as needed, just like other sections.

Best Practices (Recommended but Not Required)

  • Divide each recipe section into subsections for a clear and organized text structure.
  • Repeat ingredient names and quantities in each step to ensure the best reader experience. (See this recipe for an example here)

  • Optional field.
  • Organize your recipe section with numbers or letters to guide readers through the process.
  • Important: While numbering is optional, maintain consistent numbering across all recipe sections to ensure a cohesive and logical flow.

Enter Section Title

  • Required field.
  • Write a title that clearly describes the section’s purpose (e.g., Vegetable Preparation or Stewing Process).
  • In shorter recipes, this field can also be used to enter recipe directions directly.

Text

  • Enter your recipe directions here.
  • Use formatting options like bold text, bullet lists, and other text editor functions as needed.

+ (plus symbol)

  • Click to add a subsection.
  • Ideal for complex recipes, allowing you to create nested lists for a more organized structure (e.g., 1. Title, 1.1. Direction, 1.2. Direction, etc.).

Trash Can

  • Icon button
  • It appears only when one or more subsections have been added.
  • Click to delete the subsection. This action cannot be undone.

Add Photos

  • Button.
  • Optionally click to add a photo to illustrate the step.
  • Optionally add photos to each step to visually guide users through the recipe.
  • Important: Photos should be directly relevant to the step they accompany.

Recipe Variables – Detailed

This section is best suited for recipes with multiple possible outcomes.

  • For example, you could use it in a pasta dough recipe to provide ideas on how to turn the dough into spaghetti, linguine, fettuccine, etc.
  • This section, like other sections, can be used as often as needed within a recipe.

Content

  • Required field.
  • Use the text field with the text editor to add a title and description.
  • The title is mandatory; the description is optional.

Add Item

  • Button.
  • Click to add a new item. You can add as many items as you wish.
  • Each item can include both text and a related photo (click the camera icon to add a photo).

Photo – Detailed

Use this section to insert one photo between the recipe steps (the photo will have its own section).

  • The photo will not be the title photo of the recipe nor a part of the recipe gallery.
  • This section can be used in each recipe as often as needed, just like other sections.

Search

  • Field.
  • Enter search criteria (e.g., marinara sauce), then press Enter or click Search.
  • Select the desired content – selected content will immediately appear in the list.
  • You can select as much related content as you wish at one time.

Square With Arrow

  • Icon button (appears next to each added item).
  • Click this button next to an item to learn more about it (a new window will open with information).

Trash Can

  • Icon button (appears next to each added item).
  • Click the trash can icon next to an item to delete it.

Cursor

  • Icon button (appears next to each added item).
  • Click and hold the cursor to drag and drop an item to reorder the list.
